Verona/Madison- Joseph J. Genna, age 88, died on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born on August 30, 1925 in Madison, the son of Frank and Julia (Corona) Genna. He graduated from Madison West High School in 1943. Following high school Joe entered into the US Army in 1944, serving his country in WWII. .
He was united in marriage to Mary Johnson on May 19, 1962 in Madison. Joe worked as a mail carrier with the US Postal Service for 32 years. He was also part owner and bartender of Genna’s Lounge on University Ave., Madison. After retirement, Joe enjoyed his work at the Kwik Trip in Verona where he was able to visit with and meet new people. Joe was a sports fan, especially enjoyed watching the Packers and Badgers. He and Mary enjoyed wintering in Destin, Florida. He loved to work with his hands and fix things around the house. Joe was a proud member of the Italian Workmen's Club and The Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary; his children: Steve Genna, Mary Jo Genna, and Deb (Mike) Franch; 5 grandchildren: Patrick Schreiner, Dylan and Julia Genna and Brendan and Morgan Franch; and one great-granddaughter; sister, Madeline Binger; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Vincent, Paul, Anthony and Frank Genna and sister, Anita Kundert.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone at the Verona Clinic, Dr. Scheibel, Agrace HospiceCare, and the VA Home Care Program. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, 301 N. Main Street, Verona. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass on Saturday at the church.
