“Carve your name on hearts, not tombstones. A legacy is etched into the minds of others and the stories they share about you.” – Shannon L. Alder

We all want to be remembered and feel that we contributed something to the world when we pass away. Have you thought about what legacy you will leave behind when the time comes?

legacy is defined as the amount of money or property left to someone in a will, however, leaving a legacy isn’t always associated with material goods. It is also the desire to be remembered for all that you have contributed to the world. For example, if you’ve made an impact on your loved one’s lives, their memories of you are a part of your legacy. How else can you make an impact? Here are five easy ways to leave a lasting legacy:

1. Contribute beyond yourself

One of the best ways to leave a legacy is to help make the world a better place to live in. Take part in activities that go beyond self-gain, and work to make a positive and impactful change so that your actions become your legacy when you’re gone. Some examples include volunteering your time, donating unwanted items, becoming an organ donor, and making environmental changes such as driving less, recycling, and using less water.

2. Be a role model

A positive role model serves as an example to friends, family, and even strangers. Doing the right thing, and treating people with respect and kindness can make a big impact as you teach others around you. Being a good role model to children is particularly important, as you play an essential part in their development.

3. Donate

Donating is an easy way to leave a legacy. However, we don’t just mean donating to your favorite charity, though this is a wonderful way to leave a legacy. There are many other ways in which you can donate, including your time, advice, help, effort, and other material goods like old clothing, books, and food. Helping people in need, especially those who least expect it, is a great way to give back to your community and leave a lasting legacy.

4. Be Kind

Being kind to those around you can make a big impact; after all, kindness is the best medicine. One simple act of kindness, like holding the door open for the person behind you, or complimenting a stranger, can turn a bad day into a good one, for both you and the receiver.

According to an article by Operation Warm, spreading kindness decreases anxiety in social situations. When we are kind towards others our bond with them grows. And, as a bonus, being kind reduces blood pressure and the chances of heart disease.

5. Write a Legacy Letter

legacy letter, or ethical will, is a way to share your values, blessings, life lessons, hopes and dreams for the future, love, and forgiveness with your family, friends, and community. It is not a legal document, as it does not distribute your material wealth. Rather, it is a great way to express your love, your values, and what matters to you most.
