October 27, 1928 ~ April 12, 2018 (age 89)

Madison-

Mary Lou (Matts) Jiru, age 89, passed away on April 12, 2018 surrounded by her family.

She was born on October 27, 1928 in Madison, WI, to Leslie and Mary (Cunningham) Matts.  She attended St. Raphael’s grade school and graduated from Edgewood High School in 1946. She worked at Lafollette and Sinykin law firm as a legal secretary for 31 years. Upon her retirement in June of 1992 she enjoyed traveling, especially to the Western United States.  Mary also enjoyed gardening, reading, and was a devoted member of Saint Peter’s Catholic Church in Madison, WI. But the true joy of Mary’s life was her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; siblings, John Matts, Bob (Shirley) Matts, Ruth (Curly) Jacobsen, Dudley Matts and Betty (George) Dorscheid.

She is survived by the love of her life and her best friend, William Fotes; her children, David Jiru, Susan (Joseph) Cooper, Judith Armstrong and Michael (Margaret) Jiru; grandchildren, Jason (April), Zachary, Cody and Wyatt Jiru, Jennifer (Nathan Herndon) Cooper-Herndon, Travis (Emily), Courtney and Carly Cooper and Joshua Jiru; great-grandchildren, Riley and Teegan Jiru, Leighton Jiru, Grace, Madeline, Stella and Sophia Herndon, Irene and Owen Cooper and Vincent Jiru; sister-in-law, Lorraine Matts; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 20, 2018 at ST. PETER CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5001 N. Sherman Ave., with Msgr. Charles Schluter officiating.  Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass on Friday at the church.  Burial will follow at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Agrace HospiceCare and the staff at Sylvan Crossing at Chapel Valley for the compassionate care they gave Mary.

Mary loved God and her family with all of her heart. The legacy she leaves to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren is to stay close to our God Father and be loving, honest, patient, understanding, reliable, and respectful.
