Obituary For Jerry Dean Shipman

Jerry Shipman, age 81, passed away on Thursday, October 20, 2022. He was born October 29, 1940, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the son of Rose Maxine (Hannah) and Samuel Kelly Shipman.

Jerry graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1958 and Drake University in 1962. Jerry was an astonishing high school athlete in football, basketball, and track. He was awarded first team All-State football, won first place in pole vault at Drake Relays High School Division, and first place Iowa High School as a senior. At Drake University, Jerry played football, basketball, and track for his first two years and ended his last two years with track only. He held the pole vault record there until the mid-80’s.

From Drake, Jerry started his professional career with Hallmark Cards in Kansas City, KS, where he then transferred to Cleveland, Ohio as a sales assistant. While in Cleveland, he joined the US Coast Guard Reserves. After a 6-month stint on active reserves, he went back to Kansas City and re-joined Hallmark Cards. Jerry was a big Kansas City Chiefs fan. After the Chiefs won the championship to play in the first Super Bowl in January of 1967, (against the Green Bay Packers!), Jerry and 2 of his roommates chartered a TWA commercial plane, where they sold out the whole flight in 3 days. He and 84 people headed to the game in Los Angeles, CA. But not without a first stop in Las Vegas!

In 1968, Jerry was promoted to Branch Manager and moved to Omaha, NE, where he met the love of his life Sarah (Sally) Weller. They were married on November 23, 1968. Jerry and Sally moved to Chicago, IL, for a year and then headed to Madison, WI where Jerry and his business partner purchased Madison Business Services and a few years later they purchased a small coffee and vending company and re-branded to Madison Coffee and Vending, which after his partner retired, Jerry continued to run a very successful Madison Coffee and Vending, until he retired and sold his company in 2013. Jerry is survived by his wife Sally and his two Daughters, Janet Kathleen Shipman, and Elizabeth Ann Shipman. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepdad, James Cameron; and two half-brothers.

Sally, Janet, and Beth are hosting a casual memorial from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Friday, October 28, 2022, at Ryan Funeral Home, 2418 North Sherman Ave, Madison, Wisconsin. To view and sign this guestbook, please visit: www.ryanfuneralservice.com.

We are grateful to have shared time with Uncle Jerry on this earthly journey. May his light continue to shine through Aunt Sal, Janet and Beth. Psalm 34:18 The Lord is near the brokenhearted and saves those whose spirits are crushed. Paul & Betsy Hetzler

So sorry to see about Jerry's passing. I worked with him and his partner for several years where I met and made so many friends! Have many fond memories of Christmas parties and gatherings at "CJ's" also.

Sally, Janet & Beth, I'm thankful to have known this giant of a man with a heart of gold and a lovely dry wit to match. What a laugh and smile. A magnanimous man if ever there was one, who relentlessly dragged my dad into the freezing cold, season after season to take in another Badgers game. Wishing you comfort, peace and love in this time of sadness and loss.

It was an honor and a privilege to know Jerry. He was on our senior and super senior tennis team which on several occasions traveled to Indianapolis to play in the regional finals. I remember on one occasion we were watching Jerry and his partner battling a tough Illinois team. We were cheering him on from behind a glass that of course prevented him from hearing us. As a result of our constant encouragement one of the ladies watching in front of us asked which one was Jerry? I explained that he was the tall good look'n one on court 4 with the the long legs and I would introduce him to everyone after the match. It wasn't very long before this group ALSO started rooting for Jerry. That was amazing because they were wife's from the other team. Never met a person that didn't like Jerry. He was always a gentleman on and off the court or links. RIP Jerry, you will not be forgotten. David Chalgren

Jerry (aka Papa Jer) will be missed immensely!! Our children Kalena and Grant have always thought of him as their grandfather and he always made time to ask them about their lives and make time to go see some sporting events. It was always nice to sit and chat with Jerry whatever it may have been about and we will miss that great smile! Since the day we moved into the neighborhood 15years ago the shipman family treated us like their own and we love you all so much! Please allow us to be there in anyway we can going forward. Love, Todd, Shawn, Kalena and Grant

So thankful to have known Jerry and be welcomed by the entire Shipman family in Cherokee. We will miss chatting with him after a dog walk, lawn mowing, or just a random window yell. I always enjoyed his stories about hunting, golf, and business. We even got him to come out for fireworks once! Jerry was an amazing person, friend, and neighbor. We love you all and are here for anything y'all need! Jed and Chuck

what our families say

Tiffany Foster went out of her way to fulfill all my requests, talked me through problems I was facing, and tried to make me feel as comfortable as possible when I was a wreck, totally crushed, and I thank her with all of my heart for that.

James S. | July 2020

The professional manner of the staff made a difficult time a little easier.

Lynda R. | July 2020

Services provided for both parents were perfect, on time, and no issues. Brenda is awesome and strong!

Michael M. | July 2020

Skyler was absolutely amazing. She was so caring and helpful through this whole process. She even went above and beyond to meet with us in DeForest and even to make a stop at our home to drop off or pick up anything needed. While it was a small gesture, it was so helpful and greatly appreciated.
