Luke Diebel
May 08, 2017 - August 03, 2024
Obituary
Luke Fisher Diebel, age 7, died on August 3, 2024, in Madison, Wisconsin.
Luke was born May 8, 2017, to parents Rebecca and Matthew Diebel. He was beloved by his older sister Cora, grandparents Robert and Lynne Diebel, Roxanne Loomis and Ric Gass and many aunts, uncles and cousins and friends. He was a rising second grader at Midvale Elementary School.
Luke dashed through the world – running, jumping, and climbing – life was a full-contact adventure. He delighted in surprises, sneaking, and building little hideouts. He could scramble up a tree and disappear in the branches too fast to be noticed, then laugh when he was finally spotted.
Luke was helping his family raise their golden retriever, Poppy, and wrestled with her like a puppy himself. He was fascinated by all animals, but big cats, dinosaurs, and fishes were his favorites.
He found great joy being on, in and around water, swimming, splashing and especially fishing, one of the things for which Luke had unlimited patience. He could spend a whole day beside the lake, focused on pursuit of bluegill.
Luke was a strong, brave, and sweet boy who met challenges in life with a courage beyond his years. While he often insisted on doing things his own way, Luke found comfort in and shared a tender affection for his family, and had a special admiration for his big sister.
Wherever you are, Luke, keep being your wonderful, exuberant self, running around like a wild man, leaping from the furniture.
“…Come away …to the waters and the wild, with a faery hand in hand, for the world’s more full of weeping than you can understand.” – from The Stolen Child, W.B. Yeats
A private memorial service will be held in October. The family has established a memorial fund which will be used to support opportunities for kids in the Madison area to learn how to fish. Donations to the fund will be accepted by the Madison Parks Foundation at Madison Boats (madisonparksfoundation.org). Please indicate in the gift notes that you would like the donation applied to the Luke Fisher Diebel memorial fund.

Rebecca and Matt - There is nothing sadder than losing a child. It sounds like Luke lived his life to the fullest every single day. I firmly believe he is running through the woods with all the puppies and catching the biggest fish and releasing them. Remember to take care of each other and yourselves. Luke's love still surrounds you. Pat Malone
