Obituary For Stuart J. "Stu" Butler

Stuart J. “Stu” Butler, age 61, died peacefully on Thursday, November 17, 2022, from liver cancer surrounded by his family at home. Stu, the son of Patrick and Ruth (Cadwell) Butler, was born on June 5, 1961, in Madison WI.

He attended La Follette High School, and then continued his studies at Madison Technical College. Stu and his older brother, Hawley, created Butler Painting & Prefinishing, where he spent over 40 years serving the Deforest and surrounding area.

Stu had a wonderful life filled with a tight knit, loving family and close group of friends. He enjoyed his free time on the golf course, hunting, and watching Badger sports.

There are some things that make Stu who he is. His family was his world. He was always finding ways to make his wife of over 30 years feel loved and special with his romantic heart. He was relied on by many, and you could always count on him for coming to help. He was thrilled to become a grandpa and cherished seeing his granddaughter grow. Stu was meticulous about his work; nothing went out the door unless it was perfect. He took great pride in what he did. His golf game got a lot of practice. He would get out there any chance he could, even hit a hole in one in his career. Stu loved to be outdoors, his trips out West to hunt mule deer with his brother and friends and walleye fishing on Lake Erie. Chasing storms or watching them from his porch at home, everything about nature caught his attention. He loved what life had to offer.

Stu is survived by his wife, Alice (Needham) Butler, married 34 years; children, Nathan (Allison) Butler and Preston Butler; granddaughter, Alaina Butler; mother, Ruth Butler; siblings, Julie (Bob) Wipperfurth, Hawley (Teal) Butler, Chris (Lisa) Butler, and Jodie (Jim) Wing; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father, Patrick Butler.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church, 2420 St. Albert the Great Drive, Sun Prairie, on Wednesday, November 23, 2022, at 11:00 am with Msgr. Donn Heiar officiating. A visitation will be prior to mass at St. Albert’s from 9:30-11:00 am.

A special thanks to the staff at Agrace who helped care for Stu in his final days, and to Msgr. Donn for his thoughtfulness and prayers over Stu and the entire family.

Condolences

  • November 23, 2022

My condolences to the Butler family on the passing of Stu. I am thankful for having had the opportunity to have coached with him. He and I coached Nathan's 7th grade youth basketball team together. He paid close attention to details and had a competitive streak that allowed for insights and suggestions. I learned from Stu and made use of his ideas in my future coaching endeavors. In the years that followed, whenever I'd run into Stu, he greeted me with a welcoming smile and conversation. I felt a sense of mutual respect and I am very appreciative of this. God bless ... -Ed Sommers and Family

what our families say

Tiffany Foster went out of her way to fulfill all my requests, talked me through problems I was facing, and tried to make me feel as comfortable as possible when I was a wreck, totally crushed, and I thank her with all of my heart for that.

Lynda R. | July 2020

Michael M. | July 2020

Skyler was absolutely amazing. She was so caring and helpful through this whole process. She even went above and beyond to meet with us in DeForest and even to make a stop at our home to drop off or pick up anything needed. While it was a small gesture, it was so helpful and greatly appreciated.
