Verona - Walter D. Thieszen, age 81, from Verona, Wisconsin was welcomed into heaven on January 12th, 2023. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Karen. He also leaves behind his two daughters; Kimberly (Paul) Rozgo and Debra (Sean) Roberts, his six grandchildren; Zander, Blake, Grady, Jasper, Zoe, and Kian; brother, Darrel Thieszen; and two sisters, Laverna Morgan, and Evelyn (Bill) Batson. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Abraham and Margaret Thieszen; brother, Wilbur Thieszen; sister-in-law Verna Thieszen; brother-in-law William Morgan; and nephew, Aric Morgan.

Walter was born on November 19th, 1941 into a hard working farming family in Henderson, NE. He was the third of five children. His upbringing on the farm developed his love for the outdoors, farm machinery, and gardening. After graduating from Bethel College in Newton Kansas with a BA in Social Sciences, he earned a Master of Science Degree in Social Work from the University of Tennessee in Nashville. Walter was employed by the Wisconsin Department of Corrections in various administrative positions for 32 years. After his retirement, he worked for 15 years at O.J. Noer Turfgrass Research and Education Facility as the Assistant Grounds Manager. Walter enjoyed collecting toy tractors, wood working, mowing grass, taking care of tractors, being outside and spending time with friends. Walter's greatest pride and joy was his family, both near and far. He was such a proud father and grandfather. He loved spending time reading and playing games with his grandchildren and eagerly attended sporting events, school activities, and music recitals. Walter's gentleness, sense of humor, generosity and smile will be missed by his family and friends.

My name is Nancy Meyer and I worked with Walter on various projects at the WI Department of Corrections over the years. I worked there for 20+ years. He was a wonderful man to work with!! My parents were also good friends of Walter's at Bethany Methodist Church. They were John and Wilma Meyer. We are so sorry to hear of Walter's passing. We now live full time in Florida so we won't be able to attend the services. We extend to you our deepest sympathy. Walter will be missed. He was a wonderful man!!

what our families say

Tiffany Foster went out of her way to fulfill all my requests, talked me through problems I was facing, and tried to make me feel as comfortable as possible when I was a wreck, totally crushed, and I thank her with all of my heart for that.

James S. | July 2020

The professional manner of the staff made a difficult time a little easier.

Lynda R. | July 2020

Services provided for both parents were perfect, on time, and no issues. Brenda is awesome and strong!

Michael M. | July 2020

Skyler was absolutely amazing. She was so caring and helpful through this whole process. She even went above and beyond to meet with us in DeForest and even to make a stop at our home to drop off or pick up anything needed. While it was a small gesture, it was so helpful and greatly appreciated.
