Obituary

Madison/Montfort - It is with great sadness that the family of Gertrude E. “Trudy” (Dickey) Nechkash, 81, of Madison, WI, announces her passing on December 29, 2020 at UW Hospital. Trudy was born on February 2, 1939 to Richard and Vera (Livens) Dickey in Lancaster, WI. She married her sweetheart and love of her life, LaVern “Toby” Nechkash on September 27, 1958, at St. Thomas Parish in Montfort, WI. Trudy and Toby were often seen holding hands and their love for each other was admired by many. It was rare to see one without the other. They lived in various areas of the City of Madison until they moved to their current home of the past 52 years. Trudy was employed by Woolworths in her younger years. While raising their children, she did home childcare, caring for them as her own. Then after working 26 years as an Expediter at Madison Newspaper, she retired. Trudy and Toby enjoyed traveling together across all 50 United States and Canada visiting family, friends, and attending many country music events; meeting Roy Rogers was one of the highlights of her life! They were marvelous dancers and enjoyed going to dances whenever given the opportunity.

Trudy will be missed by their beloved dog, Misty. Over the years they raised many farm animals and planted vegetables which they canned and preserved. She enjoyed and took great pride in her flower gardens. Trudy was a passionate birdwatcher and knew the songs of many.

Trudy was an excellent cook and baker and enjoyed making pies, cinnamon rolls, cookies, and candies. Her beautifully decorated cakes that she made for special occasions will be greatly missed. She enjoyed solving the daily word jumble in the newspaper, putting together jigsaw puzzles, and was always ready for a game of scrabble.

Trudy was an avid seamstress, sewing beautiful embroidered quilts for grandchildren, great-grandchildren, Josh Turner’s children and a large cardinal embroidery-block for herself. She sewed baby bibs, crocheted kitchen towel toppers and afghans, and gave them for gifts and fundraisers and altered her daughters’ wedding dresses.
Trudy never minded when a holiday was celebrated, “as long as everyone in the family could get together!” She took on the role of communicator and kept family, classmates, and siblings apprised of news and events.

Trudy will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 62 years, their five children: Karla (Rod) Hellenbrand of Verona; Toby Nechkash (Zoe Kooistra) of Madison; Todd Nechkash of Ridgeway; Brenda (Kevin) Bohan of Mineral Point; and Beth (Mike) Beutler of New Glarus; Grandchildren: Zachary, Austin (Anna Modica), and Ciarah (Ryan Weiss) Hellenbrand; Stephanie Yost; Todd II Nechkash; Colin, Casey, and Emily Bohan; Tyler and Travis Beutler, and Ashley (Marty) Schumacher; and Great-Grandchildren: Jordan and Mia Schumacher.
Trudy is survived by her sisters Dorothy Thompson and Lynda (Stan) Cutler and will be missed by many nieces and nephews, and close friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Harold, Vernon, Don, and Buryl Dickey; brothers-in-law: Paul Thompson and Jerry Lengyel; sisters-in-law: Marilyn and Joan Dickey and nephews: Lavern, Michael, Donald, Robbin, Doug, and Jerry II.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 8, 2021, at ST. THOMAS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 104 E. Park St., Montfort, WI, with Father Jim Murphy presiding. A visitation will take place from 11 a.m. until the time of Mass. A livestream of the Mass will be available for those unable to attend. A Celebration of Trudy's life will be held in Verona at a later date. To view and sign this guestbook, please visit: www.ryanfuneralservice.com.

“The Broken Chain”
We little knew that morning,
That God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly,
In death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you,
You did not go alone;
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.
You left us peaceful memories,
Your love is still our guide;
And though we cannot see you,
You are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken,
And nothing seems the same;
But as God calls us one by one,
The Chain will link again.
