Winifred "Winnie" Lacy

June 25, 1933 ~ July 8, 2021 (age 88)

Fitchburg -Winifred Mae Lacy left us on July 8, 2021, in Fitchburg, Wisconsin. She was born on 25 June, 1933 in Madison to George and Elizabeth “Leita” (Farrell) Lottes. She enjoyed a childhood full of family, friends, and neighbors growing up on Williamson Street on Madison’s East side. Winnie attended Holy Redeemer school, later graduating from Edgewood High School. It was at Edgewood where she met her locker partner Ellen Lacy. After graduation the two rented an apartment downtown and Ellen’s brother, Philip, helped move a sewing machine into their apartment. Phil and Winnie were married on 18 October 1958; thus beginning a journey together that lasted more than 60 years.

After their wedding, the couple moved to a house on a Lacy Family farm in Fitchburg, and city-girl Winnie became country-wife Winnie. There was a lot to learn, and she credits her angel of a Mother-in-law Alma “Girlie” Lacy with showing her the ropes. Her maternity leave from Brockman Dental office lasted for more than 30 years as she raised seven children, gardened (including selling pickling cucumbers for “mad money”), volunteered at St James School and Edgewood High School, anchored a bowling team, was an active member of the Fitchburg Historical Society, sang for years in the St. Raphael’s choir, and became a familiar face at the Fitchburg Senior Center, all while keeping a household running! She reentered the workforce as an executive assistant, working at both CUNA Mutual and Nicolet until officially retiring. For many years Winnie was well-known at polling stations in Fitchburg; she coordinated many elections over the years and was a strong proponent of the democratic process. A life-long learner, she attended many sessions of College Week for Women and enrichment courses at MATC, including drapery and tailoring classes.

It was after retirement that Winnie’s writing career took hold. A lifetime of adventures, mishaps, and family tales were put to paper in several short story collections, inspired by writing classes she attended. An enthusiastic genealogist, Winnie meticulously documented the lineage of the Lottes and Lacy families. This has culminated in her greatest work, “Roads to the Past”, documenting how multiple family lines came to Wisconsin and settled in the Pine Bluff, Fitchburg and Madison areas.

Winnie is survived by a dynamic crew; Mary Beth Lacy and Daniel Klein, Tom and Karen Lacy, Bill and Norleen Lacy, Joe and Sandy Lacy, Anne Lacy and Paul Heimann, Kit Lacy and Tim Greenfield, Dan and Jen Lacy; nine grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, numerous step grandchildren and step great grandchildren, sister-in-law Joanne Lottes, in-laws, Paul and Milda Lacy, Howard and Carolyn Lacy, Ellen Palzkill, and John Lacy and Maureen Richards; numerous nieces and nephews, dear cousins, and a wealth of close friends. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Phil, in April of this year; her parents; her brother Jimmie; Phil’s parents Leo and Alma Lacy; and son-in-law Jon Wendt, nieces Linda (Lacy) Duren and Louise (Lacy) Peterson, and Ellen's husband Richard "Dick" Palzkill.

The family wishes to thank all who have helped to care for Winnie; the doctors, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, social workers; the caregivers that allowed her to stay at home for as long as possible; and the wonderful people at Agrace for their professionalism and compassion.

In lieu of flowers, if you wish to make a donation in her memory, the family feels that Winnie would wish donations to go to the Fitchburg Senior Center or Agrace.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, July 23, 2021, at Our Lady Queen of Peace, 401 S Owen Dr, Madison at 11:30 a.m. A visitation will be held on Friday at the church from 9:30 a.m until 11:30 a.m.
