Obituary
Lloyd E. Hornbacher, age 92, of Verona, Wisconsin, passed away on Monday, April 27, 2026. He was born on February 21, 1934, and raised in Butte, North Dakota, Lloyd was the son of Alvin and Elizabeth (Zoller) Hornbacher. He married Ellen Elefson on October 27, 1956. They were married for 66 years; she preceded him in death in 2022.
Lloyd graduated from Minot State Teacher College in 1956 and devoted his life to education. He was a well-known figure in the halls of Verona Area High School, serving as principal for over two decades.
A sports lover from a young age, Lloyd led his Butte High School basketball team to a state championship win in 1952. As a coach, his Stanley High School basketball squad won a regional championship. Lloyd was a lifelong Yankees fan, and after moving to Wisconsin, rooted passionately for the Packers, Badgers, and Brewers. When asked what his favorite sport was, he always replied, “What season is it?”
Lloyd was very proud of his family, traveled extensively throughout his life, and had an extraordinary memory. His knowledge of sports trivia, country and bluegrass music, geography, and U.S. history was encyclopedic.
Lloyd is survived by his daughter, Shelly Nicholson; his son, Mark; his son Jon and daughter-in-law Andrea; his grandchildren, Molly Nicholson; Lauren, and Alex; and his special friend Carolyn Shelp.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Gary, and sister, Marilyn Anderson.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 29, 2026, at St. James Lutheran Church, 427 S Main St, Verona, WI. The visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at church, with a luncheon to follow.
