LaMonte Neil (Monte) Johnston
June 23, 1944 – July 21, 2025
LaMonte Neil “Monte” Johnston died unexpectedly Monday, July 21, 2025, at UW Hospital. He was born June 23, 1944, to Neil and Ila Johnston in Neillsville, WI. Monte graduated from Loyal High School in 1962 and served in the US Navy from 1963-1965.
Monte is survived by his wife, Margery Klinge of Madison. His children: Damon (Trisha) Johnston of Lone Rock, Darin (Deb) Johnston of Muscoda, Dana (Doug Cvetkovich) Johnston of Sun Prairie, and Adam Scales of Oxford. Two stepdaughters: Robyn (Justin Schmitz) Klinge of Madison and Jana (TJ) Smith of Bozeman, MT.
He is further survived by his brothers: Craig (Rachel) Johnston of Marshfield and Brian (Vicki Bauer) Johnston of Loyal. Seven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Celeste Scales.
A Celebration of Monte’s Life will start at 1:00 P.M. on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at American Legion Post 481, 5337 River Road, Waunakee, WI. Military Honors will take place at 1:30 P.M at the Legion.
