Obituary
MADISON - Joseph Charles Carter, age 74, passed away on Monday, August 4, 2025. Joe was born on July 31, 1951, in Wabasha, MN to Harold and Ethel (Koenig) Carter. He graduated from Plainview High School, MN in 1969. Later he went to Mankato College (Minnesota State University) for his undergrad in industrial arts education and received his MBA from Cardinal Stritch. Joe married his high school sweetheart, Janice Johnson, on June 19, 1971, in Plainview, MN. He started his career as a teacher, had several jobs throughout the years, and retired from Alliant Energy as a project manager. He loved, driving his convertible, playing pickleball, hiking, biking on his e-bike, traveling, photography, retirement, and especially spending time with family. Joe’s many hobbies were landscaping his yard, building furniture for their house, and writing humorous stories.
Joe is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jan; children, Kelly (Matthew) Turner and Brian (Jessica); grandchildren, Emerson, Larkin, Aubrey, and Maren; siblings Harry (Marie), George (Joanne), Mary Nestor, Pat (Vicki), Kathy (Warren) Olson, Tim (Crystal), Susan (Robert) Askildson, Sharon (Lee) Mollan, Sandy (Brian) Rauls, Tracy (Daren) Hofschulte. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other family and friends. Joe is preceded in death by his parents, siblings Patrick and Patricia, brother-in-law Phil Nestor, and nephew Mike Dickinson.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at Ryan Funeral Home: 6728 Mader Drive, Madison, WI. Visitation from 10:00AM until 11:00AM with the Celebration starting at 11:00AM.
A special thanks to the Triage Team at the UW Carbone Cancer Center, Dr. Howard, Dr. Bhatia, nurse Scott, and the Pallative Care Team at UW Hospital for their loving care and support.
