Maureen Bergstrom

April 23, 1942 - September 18, 2025

Obituary

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of our beloved mother, Maureen (Boyle) Bergstrom of Madison, WI. Maureen passed away on September 18, 2025 after a battle with cancer. She was born in Superior, WI on April 23, 1942 to Neil and Evelyn (Nelson) Boyle. She was given the nickname “Boots” when she was a baby and couldn’t keep her booties on her feet. The name stuck with her for her whole life as even her grandchildren called her Grandma Boots. She graduated from Cathedral High School in Superior and later moved to the Madison area. Maureen worked most of her life in the food service industry. She loved to cook for others and especially enjoyed her time working at UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee. She loved talking with the students and getting to know them. This is where she was lovingly given the second nickname of “Mo,” which is the name still used by her friends. What Maureen loved most was her family. Maureen’s kids, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren meant the world to her. She was very involved in all of their lives and would do anything she could for any of us. She always wanted to know what every grandchild and great-grandchild was up to in their lives. Maureen also loved her sports teams. She enjoyed getting all decked out in her team colors and cheering for the Badgers and Packers. She had a zest for life and a great sense of humor. She loved to joke around with people. She was well known for being a giving person. Most who knew her would say she would “give you the shirt off her back.” She made friends everywhere she went. Maureen was preceded in death by her parents, Neil and Evelyn Boyle as well as her sister, Barbara and her brothers, Neil and Jerry. She is survived by her 4 children, Brad Bergstrom, Cheryl (Bergstrom) Miller, Alan (Leslie) Bergstrom, and Cindy (Roger) Niesen. Maureen is also survived by her sister, Linda, and brother, Wayne. We are heartbroken to say goodbye to our mom, grandma, and great-grandma. There will be a hole in our hearts and lives. It is a comfort that Mom had a strong faith, knew where she was going, and that we would see each other again one day. Until that day, we will cherish our memories. We love you a bushel and peck and a hug around the neck. We want to thank the Crossroads Care Center for caring for Mom after her surgeries and Agrace Hospice Care for taking such good care of her at the end of her life.

A celebration of Maureen’s life will take place on Sunday, September 28, 2025 from 1:00-2:30 p.m., with a time of sharing at 2:30 p.m. at Ryan Funeral Home, 2418 N. Sherman Ave., Madison, WI. Mom asked that it be known that she wants everyone who attends her service to wear whatever they want. She doesn’t want anyone to feel like they had to “dress-up” for her. This is just like her to make sure everyone feels comfortable.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Agrace Hospice www.agrace.org.

We were both in high school in Superior, me at central and Boots at the Catholic school when we met when her sister and my Uncle Bill started dating and married. I remember making pizza at her house and enjoying getting together with other school friends. Our family moved from Superior in my Junior year so many years passed before I saw Boots again at Barbara's funeral. Think the separation of Barbara and Bill was hard. Thought of Boots many times during the past love to her family.

This is such a lovely picture of Maureen. I lived about 3 apartments away from her at Westminster for many years. We always had a fun time, she had such a great sense of humor. I lost track of her when she left Westminster. I lived there from 2005 to 2025. God bless her and she'll keep everyone laughing in heaven. My sympathy to all of her family.
