Obituary
Marian A. Hanneman, age 90, passed away on February 11, 2026 in Verona, WI. Marian was born at home to Walter and Bella (Wartner) Mather during a snow storm, where the doctor needed a snowplow to lead the way to their farm in Merrimac, WI. As a teenager, Marian learned to bake pies early in the morning at the local bakery, baking around 40 pies before 8:00 AM!
Marian married Lester M. Hanneman on July 28, 1953 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Baraboo, WI.
She was a Nursing Assistant for 45 years at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, WI. After retirement, she volunteered at the hospital and with Agrace Hospice. Nursing wasn’t her only career. She and Les ran a very busy L&M Ceramic Studio in their home, making many close friends of her students. Marian was an accomplished artist who loved to embroider and knit. She also enjoyed vacations in Door County.
Marian is survived by her children, Mark Hanneman of Tomah, Teresa (Frank) Watson of Dodgeville, Brian (Cathy) Hanneman of Madison, Sandy Szczech of Madison; grandchildren, Jeremy (Karmelletia), Joshua (Elizabeth), Charles (Kayla), Alice (Michael), Michele, Jacob, Erika (Austin), Leah; great-grandchildren, Ronan, Saoirse, Cory, Dakota, Rafe, Wyatt, Anabelle; siblings, Robert (Lorelei) Mather, Mary Mather, Frances (Paul) Breitbach, Sr. Judy Mather, Evelyn Mather; brother-in-law, Bob Walker; several nieces, nephews, other loving family and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; parents-in-law, Lester P. and Marion (Lentz) Hanneman; her husband of 68 years, Les; daughter, Linda Ray; grandson, Alex Watson; granddaughter, Jessica Ray; siblings, Tom Mather, Nancy Voss, Laurel Walker, and Aileen (George) Reilly; brothers-in-law, Harold (Barbara) Hanneman, Charles (Minnie); sisters-in-law, Elaine Hanneman, Anabelle (Louis) Munz.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 21, 2026 at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, 5313 Flad Ave., Madison, WI. A visitation will take place at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass. A luncheon will follow. Burial will be at St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery in Lodi.
