Obituary

DeForest, Wisconsin - August (Augie) Munoz,  93, passed away on Thursday, March 26, 2026 at Bay Harbor Memory Care in DeForest. Born on August 7, 1932 on the small Pacific island and US Territory of Guam.  He was the son of Jose and Elena (Garrido) Munoz.

After his high school graduation, he enlisted in the US Air Force.  After honorable discharge from the military, he looked to further his education and enrolled at the University of Wisconsin, Superior where he later received his master’s degree in education. While studying in Superior, he spent summers on the shores of Lake Nebagamon, working at Camp Nebagamon mentoring young men to establish personal goals and self confidence that would last a lifetime.

It was in Superior that he met the love of his life, Barbara Evenson.  They were married in March of 1960 and then moved to Merrill Wisconsin.  It was in Merrill that they began their family.  They had two sons, Scott and Jeffrey.

He was focused on education his entire life.  He began teaching American History at Merrill High School.  It was his passion teaching history until the day he passed.  Augie was also an enthusiastic debate coach and always proud of his debaters and their many wins and trophies.

He eventually moved on and into school administration with the Merrill School System. In 1978 he accepted the position as Superintend of Schools for the DeForest School System.  He remained in that position until he retired in 1989.

Augie was active in many DeForest community organizations including, the Lions Club, Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, DeForest and Windsor Now and more.  He was also proud of the oratorical contest he developed that provided scholarships to DeForest High School students that presented meaningful understanding of the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights and commemorating Constitution Day on September 17th.

Many remember Augie for his passion of sports. He was a daily jogger, avid tennis player and golfer.  His love for tennis endured for years and played competitively in various championships.

After retiring, he and Barb began spending winters in Arizona where they enjoyed their winter home for almost 30 years.

Augies love for his family and country was unwavering.  He was a proud Veteran, devoted husband, father and grandfather.

In addition to being remembered for his kindness and love, he was a wonderful teacher and historian.  He endlessly studied the US Constitution and handing out pocket constitutions became his unforgettable trademark.  Even his license plate read TJ 1776.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Elmer, Ben and Johnny and sister Theresita (George) Flores and his wife, Barbara.

He is survived by his children, Scott, Jeffrey and Rea (Cassidy) and his grandchildren Devon, Seamus, Liam, Aidan and Molly. His brothers, Joe Munoz, Ignacio (Geri) Munoz, along with many nieces and nephews, Steven Baker, Shyrine McKitrick and Jerry Sass.

The family would like to thank and acknowledge the friendship of Mike and Bernice Hirsch. Their dedication of kindness and support was unparalleled.  Thanks also to the staff at Bay Harbor Memory Care and Agrace Hospice.

It was a life well lived.  Hafa Adai!
