Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Michael James "Stearnzy" Stearns. Michael, age 73, passed away on May 9th, 2026, at Meriter Hospital with his family by his side. He was born on Nov 2, 1952, to James and Edith (Cunningham) Stearns. He achieved his dream of owning lakefront property on Buffalo Lake in Packwaukee, WI.  His own piece of paradise. Michael graduated from Sun Prairie High School, and afterwards he served a short stint in the Vietnam War. Michael then married his former wife, Eileen, from La Follette High School and had three beautiful children. Even after they parted ways, they still had a close friendship which kept their family together on every occasion.

Michael could enter a room and light up those around him with his lovable quirkiness and humor. He made sure to befriend anyone he crossed paths with and always left quite the impression.

He will be remembered for his spunky, lighthearted, go-with-the-flow spirit; a true jokester at heart. If you knew Michael, you will smile at the memory of the way he told stories. It was like he always had one in his pocket, ready to share at just the right moment, allowing those around him to feel like they were experiencing the memory right there with him. Michael's passions became some of the greatest gifts he passed on to his children. He made sure each of his kids experienced the traditions he loved so much, teaching them not only how to fish and hunt, but also the value of time spent together, patience, and laughter. Of all the jobs Michael worked at, Waunakee High School was by far his most loved. This is where he quickly became the legendary custodian. He loved watching the teams' sports and functions, which he really enjoyed. This is also where he earned his nickname from the students: "Stearnzy", a name he inherited proudly and that reflected the lasting impression he made on everyone around him. His lovable personality, the go-with-the-flow attitude, and unforgettable sense of humor made him someone people naturally gravitated toward. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories, laughter, and traditions that will continue through the family he loved so deeply. He will be profoundly missed and forever remembered.

Michael is survived by his children, Joshua (Jeannie) Stearns, Jamie (Karl) Wirag, and Brianna Stearns (Kyle Rabelhofer); his brother, Rick (Sue) Stearns; grandchildren and bonus grandchildren, Jaden, Ryker, Asher, Briana, Brady, Andrew, and Caden; friend and former wife, Eileen; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Linda Leisen, Pam Crawford, Jamie Stearns, and Jay Stearns; and many aunts and uncles.
