Gary Lee Lay, 79, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2026, at home in DeForest, Wi, surrounded by the love of his family.
Gary was born on September 30, 1946, in Covington, KY, to Fred and Laura Mae (Tupman) Lay. He graduated from Holmes High School in 1964. Gary went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Navy from 1966 to 1971, aboard the USS Ticonderoga during the Vietnam War, attaining the rank of Aviation Ordinance Airman E-3. Gary lived a life marked by kindness, generosity, and a deep love for the people around him. Whether through a comforting conversation, a shared laughter, or quiet acts of support, Gary had a special way of making others feel cared for and welcomed.
On June 19, 1982, Gary married Patricia “Pat” Dorning, beginning a 44-year marriage filled with love, laughter, and devotion to family.
Gary dedicated many years to being a route salesman for Pepsi Cola, where he earned the respect and friendship of colleagues and the community alike. He also enjoyed his sales work with Dennert Distributing, being honored as the Sheriff of Kenton County, as well as various security positions.
Outside of work, he found joy in fishing, camping, playing euchre, horseshoes, relaxing with an occasional cold beer, and especially treasured time spent with family and friends. As a proud veteran, Gary was an active member of VFW Post 8483, American Legion Post 348, and the Fraternal Order of Police.
Though deeply missed, Gary’s love and spirit will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
Above all, Gary, will be remembered for his warm heart, steady presence, and the love he shared so freely. He leaves behind his wife, Pat; children, Steven Michael Lay, Christina Ann Lay Eten (George), Kelly Lynn Lay Burley (John); grandchildren, Brooke (Dustin), Bryan (Phoebe), Nicholas, Tyler, Lauren, Maxwell, and Alexander; 6 great-grandchildren; and several close friends who will carry his memory forward with gratitude and love. He was preceded in death by parents, Fred and Laura Mae.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2026, from 10:00AM until 11:00AM at Ryan Funeral Home, 2418 N. Sherman Avenue, Madison. A memorial service will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday at the funeral home followed by a Celebration of Life at 1:00PM at VFW Post 8483, 5737 County Hwy CV, Madison.
