Cameron McCarthy

You have my sincere condolences at Cammy's passing. I remember him as smiling, happy man. The photo of him in the canoe is a perfect memory.

Cam. The name carries such fond memories. I have met other Cams in my life, but they have never met the “Cam” McCarthy criteria. Growing up across the street from the McCarthy’s, they felt like the best kind of family. An extra Grandma and Grandpa, and older brothers and sisters, just across the road. His bigness to a young girl could have made him unreachable, but his kindness exuded his size. Cam’s smile had a mischievous jolt, yet conveyed safety and fun. As his children got older, my sister, Paula, and I were lucky to be just across the street. When he was going canoeing, we were blessed to be invited on a regular basis. Surprisingly, in all my thousands of photos, I do not have pictures of canoeing trips. The photos are stored with the memories…memories of learning the proper way to use an oar and how to determine the depth of the water by the color and shading. Cam was confident enough in our abilities to canoe in waters that looked troublesome and scary. Even though I don’t know how to swim, time spent with Cam, in the canoe, was (and is) the only time I trusted life jackets. 😊The peace of the adventure removed my fears and apparently, I was focused and in the moment. Canoe trips meant “getting to” have Spam with saltines, and apples for lunch, cut with a jackknife. Mom and Dad were also reminiscing about coffee klatches (though Cam didn’t drink coffee) and conversations throughout the decades of friendship. Cam left an incredible legacy in the world through his acts of thoughtfulness, patience, and taking the time to share our wonderful world with us through something he loved doing. Huge hugs to each of you, and may God wrap His arms around you through this time of sorrow.
