Obituary

Madison- Michael "Mike" A. Boyd passed away at home on June 23, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 31, 1949, in Madison, WI to Robert and Viola (Young) Boyd. He graduated from Madison East High School in 1968. On November 3, 1973, Michael married his next-door neighbor,  Nancy Clark, and together they had three children. He worked in several positions at the US Post Office for 36 years before retiring in 2004. After retirement he worked part-time at Avis until 2024.

Michael had a variety of interests and was a member of several clubs including stamps, coins and metal detecting. He enjoyed collecting unique antiques, researching his familial roots, and playing euchre and scratch-off lottery tickets. Scratch off lottery tickets became a staple gift for Michael as it was the highlight of family gatherings watching him celebrate his winnings although small and few. He also enjoyed meeting with a group of friends each morning for the past 21 years.

Michael was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He also loved and cared for his grand dogs that loved him more. Michael was kind, humble, genuine, hard-working, friendly and humorous. He loved conversing and used laughter to connect with others. His funny spirit is one of the many gifts he leaves behind.

Michael will be deeply missed and is survived by his wife, Nancy; children Emily, Eric and Claire (Tony); grandchildren, Zander, Sophia, Harrison, Max, Hudson, and Antonio; sisters, Jane (Curt) Schwenn and Debbie Boyd; and in-laws Mary (Ray), Kathy (Tim), Colleen, Tom, Ann (Jerry), Trisha and 23 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant brothers; his nephew Kevin; and, mother and father-in-law, Tom and Jean Clark.

A celebration of Michael's life will be held on August 15, 2026, from noon to 3:00pm at Dream Park, 5301 Healy Ln, Monona, WI.

The family would like to give special thanks to Michael's Agrace Hospice caregivers, especially his primary caregivers, Mo and Stephanie.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dane County Humane Society.

I was six months old when we moved in next door to the Boyd family, and ten years old when Michael married Nancy. When you’ve known someone your whole life who was always kind to you, it leaves a void that can’t be filled by anyone else. I will miss him dearly. Although he was my brother-in-law, the “in-law” part didn’t seem to fit. He was a brother in every sense of the word. He loved making people laugh and he especially loved to tease. He was the king of the teasers, and his kids were at the top of his list. (Nancy was a close second!) I’ve heard teasing is a form of love, so without a doubt, Michael loved his family. May your gentle soul rest in peace, Michael. I love you!

I know Mike through the Antiques Mall of Madison where I am a cashier and a vendor. Mike's display case had a faithful fan club. His love of and appreciation for coins was infectious. Many people would come regularly to buy stacks of coins from him for their collections. The staff, vendors and customers all loved Mike's humor and friendly smile. My father Floyd Helgesen was a custodian at East High when Mike went there. My deepest sympathies and prayers for Nancy and his children. He was a joy to have at the antique mall. Our antique mall "family" will always fondly remember Mike, as our hearts grieve.

Dear Nancy, Emily, Eric and Claire. My heart goes out to you with losing Mike at this time in your families life. I remember seeing Mile in the grocery store years ago after my Mile passed. I don't remember if it was Woodman's or Metro Market, maybe both, but he was walking up and down the aisles looking at everything wit no cart, never shopping. He would see me and remind me that we were getting old and how time was flying by. Mike was always a jokester and always willing to talk. Those were not always good days for me but I appreciated his happy banter.. Our chldren grew up together and it was nice to have that good feeling that they were always with a kind loving family. May God give you strength to carry on as a family and remember all the wonderful times that you have with Mike. Love never ends, it just grows and continues to bond us together.
