Marla Jean (McDaniel) Kamees Sr., age 69, passed away on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at her home in DeForest, WI. She was born on October 18, 1956, to Edger and Elizabeth (Brown) Layton in Waukegan, IL.
Marla lived in Illinois and Michigan before settling in DeForest, Wisconsin, where she made her home for more than 24 years. She dedicated over 25 years to the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier, retiring in 2015. Marla loved the friendships she formed along her route, especially with the older residents. She treasured their conversations and the thoughtful cards, treats, and gifts they shared with her over the years.
Known for her remarkable work ethic, Marla approached everything she did with determination and pride. Whether at work or at home, she was always busy, often taking on projects to improve and care for her house. Marla also had a deep love of music. Her home was filled with songs from every genre, and she never missed an opportunity to dance.
Above all, Marla cherished her family. She was a loving, hands-on grandmother who was delighted in spending time with her grandchildren. Marla felt especially blessed to take her children and grandchildren on trips, creating treasured memories that will live in their hearts forever.
Marla is survived by her children, Joseph (Joy) Kamees, Steena Schmidt, Marla (Joseph Rist) Anderson, Jr; grandchildren, Cheyenne, Joseph Kamees, Bree, Dimitri Bauhs, Phoebe, Gabrielle Chapman, Arianna, Kameron, Ethan Anderson, Devin, Alexis Ditsch, Alijandro Rist; siblings, Leann Diedrich, Linda Parker, Robert Layton and Marcus Layton; other close family, Elizabeth Johnson, Edgar McDaniel, Herb, Steven, Richard Yanke, Donald Layton and all their family, along with many nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her grandparents, Lee and Mable Brown; her parents, Donald and Elizabeth (Brown) Layton; siblings, Susan, Edger McDaniel, Earl Layton, Mindon Layton and Bernard Layton.
A celebration of life will be held for close family and friends.
