Obituary
Dorothy Faye Batt (nee Ralston) of Madison, Wisconsin passed away gracefully and peacefully on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. She was 92. She is survived by her son, David Batt of Stoughton, Wisconsin (wife Sue) and daughter, Susan (Batt) Racine of the Town of Middleton, Wisconsin. Her beloved husband, James (Jim) Batt, passed in 2024.
Dorothy was born in Geneva, Nebraska to Nina and Melvin Ralston. Her brother and partner in childhood shenanigans, Richard Ralston, preceded her in death.
She attended Hastings College in Nebraska studying music and nursing. There, in addition to receiving a fine initial post-secondary education, she met her husband and life partner, Jim Batt, through a wonderfully kismetic blind date mix-up.
While she enjoyed her service as a registered nurse, Dorothy found her true calling after receiving her Master of Library Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She was honored to serve as the head librarian for Madison’s Monroe Street Library for many years, becoming a beloved fixture in the community.
Dorothy’s love for animals and nature included numerous family cats and terriers, along with befriending her neighborhood crows. Her years-long passion for music came to life in teaching piano to many children over the years and playing show tunes for fellow residents at Oakwood Village.
She will be remembered for her never-ceasing kindness, positive attitude and gratitude to all.
The family thanks Oakwood Village and the Covenant Memory Care team for their love and care for Dorothy. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Dane County Humane Society. No formal services are planned.
