Mary Sturm

Mary Retta Sturm, age 96, of Madison, WI. died August 9, 2026. 

Mary was born on Dec. 5, 1929, in Platteville, WI, to Richard Walther and Alma (Willey) Walther.  She graduated from Platteville High School in 1948 and from Wisconsin State College, Platteville in 1952, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree.  On June 15, 1957, she was united in marriage with Jerome John (Jerry) Sturm in Platteville, WI.

Mary taught elementary school for several years. She took a break from teaching to raise her 4 children and then returned to work for the Worker’s Compensation Department for the State of Wisconsin, retiring in 1992. Mary enjoyed Badger Hockey, traveling, and fishing, taking many fishing trips with Jerry and their kids to Canada. After retiring, Mary started quilting, making many beautiful, quilted items for her children and grandchildren. 

She is survived by her four children: Susan (Russ) Doty of Maryland Heights, MO; Joanna Sturm of Madison; Claire (Terry) Mulrooney of Dallas, OR; and Edward (Betsy) Sturm of Burnsville, MN; and three grandchildren: Jacob Mulrooney, Jerremy Mulrooney, and Julia Sturm.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry, her parents, and her two siblings: Ruth Walther and Paul Walther. 

Her celebration of life will be held at a later date at Ryan Funeral Home, 2418 N. Sherman Ave. Madison, WI. Private burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens, 3054 Highway BB, Cottage Grove Rd., Madison, WI.
