Obituary
MADISON/WAUNAKEE- Judy Mae (Pobiecke) Auclair, age 81, passed away peacefully at home, in her sleep, on Tuesday, August 11, 2026. Judy Mae was born April 19, 1945, in Madison, WI, to John and Doris (Thompson) Pobiecke. She grew up on Northport Drive while the surrounding fields were still farmland. She graduated from Madison East High School, went on to earn her nursing degree, and devoted 36 years of her life to caring for others as a nurse at Mendota State Hospital.
In June 2011 Judy married the love of her life, Vidar Ishmael, at Lakeview Lutheran Church in Madison. The church had been an important part of Judy’s life for 70 years, and she remained an active and devoted member throughout the years. Judy and Dar first settled into life together on Myrtle Street before moving to Waunakee following the death of her father in 2016.
Judy found joy in simple things, and in the many people and animals who became part of her life. She was an avid gardener and floral specialist. Judy loved a succession of dogs and cats, enjoyed church activities, played in a volleyball league, and joined in several reading groups. Judy had an engaging personality and a great capacity to make others feel welcomed, valued, remembered. Her warmth, humor, and interest in others drew people to her, and she formed many lasting friendships.
Judy’s nursing career reflected one of the qualities that defined her best: she cared deeply for people. That compassion extended far beyond her years of service at Mendota State Hospital. Judy was the soul who showed up when someone needed her—visiting friends who were ill, checking in on those who were struggling, and offering her time and presence without expecting anything in return. She understood that sometimes the greatest gift we can give another person is simply to be there.
Judy will be remembered for her generous heart, her spirited personality, her love of animals, her devotion to her church and friends, and the countless ways she made a difference in the lives of those around her. She leaves behind memories that will continue to bring comfort and smiles to those who were fortunate enough to know and love her.
Her presence will be deeply missed, but the love she gave so freely will remain with us always.
Judy is survived by her husband, Dar; grandson, Brandon LaBelle; and a group of well-loved cousins and family.
She is preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Justina Cruz; and siblings, John Jr “Jack” Pobiecke and Faye Meidl.
A Celebration of Judy's Life will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at Lakeview Lutheran Church, 4001 Mandrake Rd, Madison, WI. Visitation will be from 10 AM until the time of service at church.
A special thanks to the UW Hospital Palliative Care team for their extreme competence, also to the Agrace Hospice Care staff for their perfect attentions as needed. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Agrace Hospice or Lakeview Lutheran Church.
