Patricia "Pat" Lay

Patricia Ann Lay (Dorning), age 75, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2026, at home in DeForest, WI, surrounded by the love of her family. 

Pat was born on June 8, 1951 in Covington, KY to Ronald and Eleanor Dorning (Hinkel). She graduated from Holy Cross High School in 1969. 

Pat dedicated many years to working in accounts receivable, spending 19 years with Hellman Lumber and 27 years with American Sound and Electronics. After retirement, Pat continued to serve her community. She was a proud member of the VFW 8483 Auxiliary, serving as Auxiliary President for 4 years, along with holding several other positions. 

On June 19, 1982, Pat married Gary Lay, beginning a 44-year marriage filled with love, laughter, and devotion to family. 

She leaves behind her children, Kelly Lynn Lay Burley (John) and Christina Ann Lay Eten (George); grandchildren, Maxwell, Alexander, Brooke (Dustin), Bryan (Phoebe), and Nicholas; 3 great-grandchildren; siblings, Pamela (Bob), Thomas (Heather), and Norma; and several nieces, nephews, and close friends who will carry her memory forward with gratitude and love. 

Pat loved nothing more than spending time with her grandchildren, as they were her greatest joy and she treasured the simple, everyday moments she shared with them. She especially enjoyed playing games, having popcorn movie nights, watching them play outside, and helping with homework. Above all else, everyone could always count on hearing Pat brag about her favorite boys. 

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gary; parents, Ronald and Eleanor; and brother Ronald. 

Though deeply missed, Pat's genuine love and spirit will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Agrace Hospice and to Dr. Monica Patel for their compassionate care and support. 

Memorials can be made in Pat's honor to the VFW 8483 Auxiliary.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2026 at Ryan Funeral Home, 2418 N. Sherman Avenue, Madison. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. The service will be followed by a Celebration of Life at 1:00 p.m. at VFW Post 8483, 5737 County Hwy CV, Madison.
