Jean M O’Brien, age 75, died unexpectedly at home on August 26, 2026, in Fitchburg, Wisconsin.
Born on July 15, 1951, Jean was educated at schools in Monona, WI, and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education. Most recently, she worked for Badger Bus and First Student in Verona, Wisconsin.
Jean will be remembered as a truly one-of-a-kind character—funny, unforgettable, and full of life in a way that touched those who knew her. She loved her family and friends deeply, and that love was always felt. She was also a fierce advocate for social justice causes, an exceptional listener, and someone who always had a helpful word of advice to offer.
She was married to her husband, Patrick O’Brien on August 18, 1973, and lived on the O’Brien family farm in Fitchburg for 53 years. She is also survived by her son, David O’Brien of Palm Springs, California, and David’s husband, Adam Papish; her brother, Don Harvey of Port Washington, Wisconsin, and his wife, Elaine; her sister, Marilyn Harvey McGinnis of Neenah, Wisconsin; and many nieces and nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her father, James Harvey, and her mother, Mary Strutt Harvey, both of Monona, Wisconsin and Homosassa, FL.
Visitation will be held Thursday, September 3, 2026, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Ryan Funeral Home in Verona. A memorial service will follow at 6:00 p.m.
Jean will be remembered with affection and gratitude for the energy, humor, and care she brought to the lives of others.
