MADISON / WESTPORT – Richard F. “Dick” Munson, age 73, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2015, after a long illness.

He was born on July 31, 1941, in Prairie du Chien, and raised by his grandmother, Irene Karlslyst, in Sun Prairie. Dick graduated from Sun Prairie High School in 1959, and was enlisted in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1961, where he served 22 months in Germany. He married the love of his life, Karen Lobenstein, on Aug. 20, 1960, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Sun Prairie. Together they shared 54 wonderful years.

He enjoyed a long and fulfilling career at GTE as a field engineer for 30 years. In retirement, he worked for six years as a driver at Zimbrick of Madison. Dick’s true passion was motorcycling and he achieved his goal of riding his bike in all 50 states with his wife.

He is survived by his wife, Karen; his children, Robin Reynolds of Dodgeville, and Rich Munson of DeForest; grandchildren, twins, Matthew (Corrie Confer) Reynolds and Brook (Jesse) Meudt, and Jake and Sam Munson; great-grandchildren, Isaac and Sidney Meudt; his sister, RenAC. (Tom) Hopkins; his niece, Rita (Michael) Smith; and his mother-in-law, Gertrude Lobenstein.

He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Clarence Lobenstein; and his son-in-law, Mark Reynolds.

The family would like to thank the UW Healthcare staff for the support and continued care they have provided.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015, at ST. PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 2126 N. Sherman Ave., Madison, with the Rev. Gerry Kuhnke presiding. Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at the church on Saturday.
