Obituary
WEST ALLIS- Mac Raymond Barnekow, age 85, died on August 11, 2015 at Brookdale Madison North in Madison, Wisconsin.
He was born on October 1, 1929, in Milwaukee, the only son of the late Mable (Stephen) (Barnekow) Spote and McKinley Barnekow. He married the late Shirley R. (Kuglitsch) Barnekow on July 23, 1949, in Wauwatosa.
Mac was a World War II veteran, having served four years in the United States Marine Corp before becoming a fire fighter for the City of Milwaukee. He began his career in law enforcement in Phoenix, Arizona, after attending the police academy there. He continued working in law enforcement after moving back to Wisconsin with his family. He worked for both city and county agencies before retiring as a Sergeant from the Marathon County Sheriff's Department in 1984.
Mac's enjoyment of the outdoors began as a young man and continued throughout his entire life. He spent many hours hunting and fishing in his beloved Northwoods.
Survivors include one daughter, Gail J. (Robert Hamilton) Barnekow, Marshfield, Missouri; one son, Craig J. (Christine Hall) Barnekow, Madison; grandchildren, Kelly (Scott) Leck, Kate Barnekow (Derrick Small), Lucas Barnekow, and their mother, Kathy Barnekow, Chelsea Hall (Greg Novak) and Callie Desch; and great-grandchildren, Addie and Fritz Leck and Margot Novak; Carol Genrich, loving companion, also survives, and her children, Nancy (David) Hayes and Bonnie (Richard) Dann; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Burial and a military honors service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 19, 2015, at HIGHLAND MEMORIAL PARK, 14875 W. Greenfield Ave., New Berlin.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to Wisconsin Honor Flight or VFW are appreciated.
Mac's children and family wish to thank the staff at St. Mary's Hospital, Dean Health Care, Brookdale Madison North Senior Living and Heartland Hospice for their compassionate care in his final days.
