Mae Fox

Surrounded by family, Mae Ilene Fox Carlson Fox died November 27, 2015 at Agrace Hospice In Fitchburg, Wisconsin.

Mae was born on August 21, 1923 to Rex and Hazel (Jones) Fox in Hubbard, Ohio. She graduated from Hartford High School in 1941 and after working for a year in a munitions plant, earning money to attend nursing school, Mae entered Sharon General Hospital Nursing School as a Nurse Cadet. Graduating in 1945, she would nurse throughout her life from coast (New Haven, Connecticut) to coast (Campbell, Sacramento, Berkeley and Albany, California) and places in between (Brookfield, Ohio, Boulder, Colorado and Baton Rouge, Louisiana.)

In 1948 she married Rev. Robert L. Carlson. The marriage ended in divorce. In 1987 she married Bill Fox. They were blessed with 20 years of marriage.

In addition to being a superb and caring nurse, Mae was a knitter and sewed beautiful garments and quilts. She played basketball in high school (in the 1930's!) was an accomplished golfer and was hard to beat at cards. Moving to Wisconsin from Baton Rouge after Bill's death, she became an avid Packers, Brewers and Badgers fan. Moving often, Mae had a remarkable ability to make and keep friends.

Growing up in rural Ohio during the depression, Mae was blessed that her own children were safe and never hungry. She was a great cook and had a deep commitment to serving her community.

Mae was proceeded in death by her parents, her sister Mary and her brother Clyde, her dear Aunt Clydie, her husband Bill and great-granddaughter Natalie Ann.

She is survived by her daughter Rev. Catherine Carlson and her husband Rev. Dr. Michael Bausch; son, Dr. Robert W. Carlson MD and his wife Stacey Starcher; grandchildren, Anica Bausch, Brianna Westhuis and her husband Aaron and Gregory Carlson; great grandchildren, Livia Mae and Wade; and nieces and nephes; Bill's children, Marcia and her husband Paul and Gayle and her husband Kerry, and Bill's grandchildren Craig and Kathy. Mae's family is thankful to all who enriched her life.

Her life will be celebrated in the community room of the Green Tree Glen Apartments, 723 Struck Street, Madison, Wisconsin on Sunday, December 20, 2015 at 1:00 pm with the Rev. Mary Mail officiating.
