Jacqueline Mathes

WAUNAKEE, WI/NORTON, KS - Jackie (Kalin) Mathes, former long-time Norton resident died on January 10, 2016. She was born April 15, 1925 in Kansas City, MO the only child of Onida Katherine Jones and John LaRoy Kalin. The family soon moved to Logan, KS living there until her father’s death in 1933. Jackie moved to Norton, KS in 1936 when her mother became a nurse at the Norton State Tuberculosis Sanitarium. Her mother married Henry VerHoef in 1937.

Jackie graduated from Norton Community High School in 1942 and attended Kansas State University for one year. She transferred to Colorado State University in Ft. Collins, graduating in December 1945. Following graduation, she taught chemistry at the college until her marriage to Dwight Mathes on September 22, 1946. The couple lived in Norton, KS all of their married life. During that time, Jackie taught Kindergarten, ran a catering business and worked as a dietitian and food supervisor at the Norton County Hospital from 1966 – 1987. After their retirement in 1987, Jackie and Dwight spent their winters in Sun City, CA. Dwight died in December 1994 and Jackie moved to Waunakee, WI in 1995. She was a member of the United Methodist Churches in both Norton and Waunakee.

Jackie is survived by two daughters: Kathie Wagner (Bruce Weber), Belleville, WI and Francine (John) Santoianni, Whittier, CA; grandchildren Zach (Jordana) Wagner, Lacey (Herb) Endres, Leah (Jesse) Tygum and Jenna (Sean) Glazier and seven great grandchildren. She is further survived by nieces Peggy Scally and Patti Long and Virginia Hoeft, AFS student who lived with the family in 1971.

Jackie was preceded in death by her husband, Dwight; infant daughter Martha, parents, step-father, mother and father in-law Viva and Leslie Mathes and sister in-law Evelyn Perrill.
