Madison:
Regina Mary Schumacher, 91, died on March 10th, 2016, in Madison, WI.
She was born in Merrill, WI, on March 8, 1925 to Peter and Katherine (Doheny) Duginski. She was a teacher in Racine when she came to Madison for Christmas break in 1945 and met the love of her life, Ken Schumacher. Regina continued teaching in and out of the classroom for most of her life.
A member of the Parish at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church of Madison since her marriage in 1947, she taught Sunday School and pre-marital counseling, as well as volunteering in the parish library. She worked with Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts when her eight children were young, then volunteered in the arena of social work in Southeast Madison. Her last volunteer job at age 90 was at the Senior Center on Madison’s Northeast side.
Always interested in learning new things, Regina traveled to Italy, the Holy Land, Greece, Morocco, China, through the Panama Canal, and Mexico. Returning home after each adventure, she gladly shared slides, pictures, mementos and memories with various groups around the city. Besides traveling, her interests included family, gardening, and community service. As a Master Gardener, she devoted much of her time and energy to gardens all around the East Side and worked with the Madison Herb Society. In 1994 Ken and Regina donated funds to Olbrich Gardens for the creation of the Schumacher Library. Regina joined her husband Ken and volunteered for many years with the R.E.A.D.I (Retired Employees Are Dedicated Individuals) group from Oscar Mayer. Regina was always involved in several organizations at a time and shared her heart and love of learning with all she met.
Regina is survived by four sons, Phil (Linda), Eugene, Danny and Greg (Ginnie); two daughters, Katy (David)Dycus and Mary; a daughter-in-law, Susan; son-in-law, Dale Peterson; one sister, Margaret Ann English; as well as eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years; their son, Peter; daughter, Jayne Peterson; as well as four brothers and three sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 1, 2016 at ST. BERNARD CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2450 Atwood Avenue, with Fr. Michael Radowicz presiding. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass. Memorials may be directed to the Schumacher Library at Olbrich Gardens.
