Joan Jellings

DEFOREST- Our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Joan I. Jellings, left a void in our lives on August 4, 2016, after a brief illness. She was born at home in Windsor on August 23, 1930, the daughter of Clarence and Irene (Grinde) Knudtson. She graduated from DeForest High School and went to work at Ohio Medical. Joan loved to dance and that is where she met her husband, Delbert Jellings. The two were united in marriage on September 30, 1950 at Burke Lutheran. Delbert was Joan’s true soul-mate and best friend, and they enjoyed each other’s company for 50 plus years until Delbert’s passing in 2003. Joan worked as a secretary at Oscar Mayer for 31 years. After retirement, Delbert and Joan traveled the world and spent a lot of time at the cabin with family and friends.

Joan loved her family and was very proud of them. She looked forward to and loved spending time with her family. She loved to shop, play euchre, gamble, craft, bake and cook, always doing so with a smile on her face. Everyone who knew Joan knew she was a true Norwegian and loved her for her big heart and great sense of humor. At her cabin in Briggsville on Lake Mason, her deck was the center attraction for good coffee, muffins and conversation.

She is survived by her daughter, Connie (Dale) Herwig; her son, Tom (Lorett) Jellings; her grandchildren, Brooke (Jon) Holste, Brett Herwig, Brandon Herwig, and Adam Jellings; her great-grandchildren, Madison, Raegan, and Morgan Holste; and many loving and supportive relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert; and her sister, Carol Sheeley.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wisconsin Office of the American Diabetes Association or the charity of your choice.

The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Aughey and the staff at St. Mary’s Hospital for their amazing care of Joan.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 8, 2016, at CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH, 220 S. Main Street, DeForest, with the Rev. Sue Beadle presiding. Burial will be held at Norway Grove Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the church. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Monday.
