Obituary
Madison – Joan Kathryn Muzzy Nagle died on August 18, 2016 at Agrace HospiceCare. She was born on May 16, 1930 in Milwaukee, Wis. At age six, her family moved to Green Bay. She had fond memories of her years there and talked often of taking her skates and walking by herself two blocks up the street to the skating rink. In Green Bay, she developed her love for Door County where her family often camped at Peninsula State Park. The love for Door County remained for a lifetime, and she spent a week there enjoying the view of Lake Michigan shortly before she died.
Her family moved to Berea, Ohio where Joan started Junior High. At the beginning of her junior year in high school, her family moved to Rockford, IL. where she graduated from Rockford East High School in 1948. She graduated from DePauw University in 1952. She spent her junior year in college as an exchange student at the University of Oslo. She enjoyed that year immensely and made lifelong friends, who she saw again when she returned in 1996.
On August 28, 1953 she married Joseph Nagle, a DePauw classmate, in Carmel, California. From there, they spent eighteen months in Orleans, France and the same amount of time in Arlington, Massachusetts, before moving to Madison in January 1958.
When the children were all in school, she enrolled at the University of Wisconsin to obtain a Masters Degree in Library Science. Following graduation, she started her career as the librarian at Emerson Elementary School where she remained for twenty one years.
After retirement, she was involved in many volunteer activities, mostly with the Madison Area Literacy Council and at First United Methodist Church where she assisted in the food pantry and the church library. She was also an enthusiastic reader, gardener and genealogist.
She is survived by her husband; her children, Timothy (Anne), Sarah, and Daniel (Cristina); and two grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 26, 2016 at FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 203 Wisconsin, Ave., Madison. Anyone wishing to make a memorial might consider the FUMC Food pantry, Porchlight Inc., or the Madison Area Literacy Council.
