Tome Meyer

Madison - Tome (Ubukata) Meyer, age 83, passed away on Monday, August 29, 2016 after a short battle with cancer. She was born on July 22, 1933 in Tokyo, Japan to parents Bunjuro and Takino Ubukata. Upon the death of her parents during the war, her family was split apart and she went to live with her Aunt Yone.

She attended Gunma Kenritus School and Tokyo Woman’s University. In 1956, she met Robert M. Meyer and they were married on January 21, 1958. They were the parents of two children, Walter and Shirley. In February 1958, Tome immigrated to the United States and was naturalized 3 years later.

During Bob’s deployment with the U.S. Marines, the family lived in Cherry Point and Havelock, NC. Upon Bob's retirement in 1969, the family moved to Madison, WI. Tome became an interpreter and translator for many visiting professors and their families from Japan. She was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church and enjoyed doing presentations on her native Japan for the children of the school.

She is survived by her son, Walter (Stacie )Meyer; daughter Shirley (Gary) Frank; five grandchildren, Julia, Kari and Bryce Meyer, Jessica and Derek Frank; brother-in-law, William Meyer and many nieces and nephews.

Tome was proceeded in death by her husband of 56 years, Robert; her parents; her brother Yousaku and sister Tuyako; and special Aunt Yone.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE, 401 S. Owen Drive, Madison with Monsignor Kenneth Fiedler presiding. A visitation will be held from 5 - 7 pm on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at JOYCE-RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 5701 Odana Road, Madison, and again from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass at Church on Wednesday. Interment will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens.
