Madison –

Gary A. “Mac” McElmurry, age 77, entered into eternal life on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at St. Mary’s Hospital. He was born on August 4, 1939 in Madison, the son of Archie and Pauline (Buskager) McElmurry. He was the first of six children and was a wonderful “Big Brother” to all of his siblings. Gary graduated from Sun Prairie High School in 1958. After graduation he proudly served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed for a time in Morocco. Upon leaving the service, Gary met and married the love of his life, Joyce Ziesch, they were married on May 23, 1964 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison.

Mac worked at Oscar Mayer for 37 years, retiring in 2000. After retirement, he enjoyed working as the custodian for Lakeview Lutheran Church, where he was also an active member, usher and lay reader. Following his stroke in 2004, he enjoyed his time at Colonial Club Adult Day Center.

Gary’s greatest joy in life was spending time with his family, most especially, his wife, daughters, granddaughters, nieces and nephews. He was also proud to be a regular blood donor. He was an avid Packer fan, loved taking care of his lawn, traveling, reading and watching courtroom TV dramas. Gary was very witty, always loving to share and hear a good joke.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Joyce; his daughters, Michele Doring and Melinda McElmurry; granddaughters, Morgan McElmurry and Keely Doring; sisters, Beverly McElmurry and Mary Carnahan; and also many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, George and Tom, and sister, Darlene “Toot” Oliver.

A funeral service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, September 19, 2016 at Lakeview Lutheran Church, 4001 Mandrake Road, Madison, with Rev. Dean Kirst officiating. Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. until the time of service on Monday at the church. Burial will be at Lakeview Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Lakeview Lutheran Church or to Home Health United Hospice.

The family would like to thank the staff of St. Mary’s Hospital-5th Floor and Home Health United Hospice for the wonderful care they gave Gary and the loving support of our family.
