William Mundt

Madison/Windsor – William “Bill” F. Mundt, age 74, passed on to eternal life on Sunday, January 15, 2017. He was born on April 25, 1942, in Watertown, Wisconsin, the son of Earl and Gertrude (Uttech) Mundt. Bill graduated from Northwestern Preparatory School in 1960 and went on to attend the University of Wisconsin – Madison. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1963 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1967. While there, he met the love of his life, Mary Reese Yahnke, whom he married in December of 1963 and with whom he celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary this past December. He began his career as an attorney with Murphy & Desmond after his graduation from law school. He was a member of the firm for over 50 years and specialized in estate planning, probate, real estate, and employee and labor law. Bill served on numerous professional and civic boards during his career.

Bill lived his life in the service of his Lord and was a life-long member of numerous WELS churches including Lord of Love Lutheran Church in DeForest. He dedicated much of his time serving as a council or board member at each of his churches, on the Board of Directors and as President of Bethesda Lutheran Homes and Services, Oakwood Lutheran Homes, WELS Foundation, and Lakeside Lutheran High School Foundation. He was also a life-long Rotarian and enjoyed all the fellowship and friends at the South Madison Rotary Club. He regularly helped the Rotary Club serve brats at Rotary Park for Badger football games. In his free time, you could find Bill tending to his vegetable or flower gardens or pursuing his life-long passion of fishing. He enjoyed catching all types of fish throughout the year but particularly enjoyed his annual musky fishing trip to the Chippewa Flowage. He was a proud father and grandfather and enjoyed teaching all the kids to fish, helping Mary babysit the grandkids, and taking them to Badger hockey games.

Bill is survived by his wife Mary; sister Rae Ann (David) Simley, brother Richard (Kathy) Mundt, sister-in-law Edith (Dick) Cordner, and brother-in-law Art (Barb) Yahnke; children Stephen (Sheri) Mundt, Andrew (Anne) Mundt, and Suzanne (Kevin) Needham; grandchildren Tyler (Jamie) Statz, Travis (Kayla) Statz, Nathan Mundt, Chelsea Statz, Abigail Mundt, Michael Needham, Amanda Needham, Caleb Orth, Claire Mundt, Morgan Mundt, Lydia Mundt, and Hannah Orth; great-grandchildren Austin, Brayden, Colt, and Oliver. He was preceded in death by his parents Earl and Gertrude Mundt, and brother-in-law Dick Cordner.

A service of Lutheran burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 20, at Lord of Love Lutheran Church, 105 Paradise Circle, DeForest, with Pastor Michael Willitz officiating. Burial will follow at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Leeds. Visitation will be held from 4 – 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 19, at Ryan Funeral Home, 6924 Lake Road, DeForest, and again on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at Lord of Love.
