Cottage Grove

Ronald (Ronnie) Frank Triggs, age 72, died Monday, January 30, 2017 at home after a brief illness. He was born on September 29, 1944 in Madison to the late Robert and Helen (Schaub) Triggs.

Ronnie was an avid and prolific hunter, trapper, fisherman and gardener. He was a member of Blonhaven Hunt Club in Orfordville and a longtime member of the Four Lakes German Shorthair Pointer Club. He was field trial champion and the recipient of the Grand National Field Trial Champion Award for his dog Peter Gunn. He was the first recipient to win both the AKC and the American Futurity Championships. Ronnie retired from the Oscar Mayer Plant in Madison in 1997. He was a proud and lifelong member of the Meat Cutter Union and had a second career as an electrician, but it was his love of the outdoors that truly defined him. When not working in his garden he could be found attending Jefferson Swap Meets with his family or hosting spur of the moment fish fries on Fridays, sharing his catch with one and all. Ronnie enjoyed spending downtime at his property in Muscoda, hunting, trapping, fishing and improving the land. Ronnie shared a special bond with his constant companion, Smoke, his German Shorthair Pointer, who he often described as the smartest and most well trained dog he’d ever owned. Among the many ways he gave back to his community, the time he donated as an instructor to Fishing Has No Boundaries, working with handicapped children teaching fishing and outdoorsman-ship, was something he and his family were so incredibly proud of. Ronnie will be remembered for his big heart, big laugh and as a loyal and giving friend.

Survivors include his wife and love of his life, Jane (Fillhouer) Triggs of Cottage Grove; his three beloved daughters, Kelly (Kevin) Russell, Janelle (Jon) Martinson, Vikki (special friend, Matt) Triggs; his six grandchildren, Nick, Kyle (special friend, Lyndsie) Russell, Brooke (Tim) Vial, Erika (Cordell) Martinson, Cale and Sydney Rogers; and his three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Bob (Louise) Triggs and Casey Triggs.

Ron was preceded in death by his brothers, Patrick and Michael; and his sister, Theresa Gage.

The lives of Ron’s family, friends and acquaintances have been enriched immeasurably by his love, generosity and his humor. He will be missed!
