Alvin Albert Joel, age 93, passed away on Sunday, May 21, 2017 at Brookdale North Assisted Living in Madison. He was the eighth of nine children born to Fred. C. and Almeda (Stretsbury) Joel on January 22, 1924 in a log cabin in Union Center, between Elroy and Wonewoc. He joined the Merchant Marines at age 16 and transported arms, ammunition and personnel through three wars; World War II, Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He was self-educated, earning a Master’s in Maritime and working as First Mate.
Al is survived by several nieces and nephews, who he enjoyed visiting between his six month tours.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters and three brothers.
A funeral service will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 2, 2017 at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 2418 N. Sherman Avenue, Madison, with Rev. Gerry Kuhnke officiating. Military honors will follow the service. Visitation will be on Friday from 5 p.m. until the time of service. Burial will be at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
