Vincent Hoffman

Vincent Peter Hoffman, age 84, died unexpectedly at home from an apparent heart attack on December 30, 2017.

Born May 22, 1933 to Inez (Breitenbach) Hoffman and Peter Frank Hoffman in Madison WI, he attended St. Bernard’s Grade School and graduated from East High School in 1951.

Vince joined the Navy in 1953 and served eight years aboard the Aircraft Carriers U.S.S. Bennington and Leyte as a Parachute Rigger Third Class and was stationed at Quonset Point Navel Airbase in Rhode Island. While out East he met the love of his life Edith (Edie) Caswell on a blind date. When he proposed, Vince said, “You stick with me kid, and you’ll go places.” He kept his promise, not only filling her heart with love, but her life with worldly travel.

They married on July 12, 1958 and moved to Madison where they raised their three daughters. He worked for the Postal Service in Madison as a letter carrier for 25 years, spending most of those years on the East side where he was steadfast in his delivery; his patrons could set their watches by his timeliness. The residents on his route loved him for his many acts of kindness, including helping the elderly read their mail. Their affection for him was evident each Christmas when our kitchen table was laden with their gifts of gratitude.

Vince was an avid outdoorsman and conservationist ahead of his time. He spent many enjoyable hours fishing, hunting and gardening. He cherished animals, including his dogs and the many creatures he fed in the back yard. When not enjoying the outdoors, Vince loved reading, stamp collecting, woodworking, puzzles and sports, especially watching his grandchildren as well as the Badgers and Packers.

If you didn’t run into Vince at a thrift store on the hunt looking to add to his many collections, you might have seen him on the dance floor swinging his favorite partner, Edie. Members of the Diamond Squares of DeForest and Boots and Slippers of Madison for over 20 years, they “do si doed” their way around the country attending dance conventions.

A devoted Catholic, whose life was grounded in his faith, Vince was a long time member of St. Dennis and St. Albert the Great parishes.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years Edie Hoffman; children Karen Hoffman (Vicki Shaffer), Laura Heried (Dean Quast); Irene Sanderson (Brian); grandchildren Abbie Marie Hill, Jennifer Agens, Dakota and Austin Heried, Corey, Spencer and Greta Sanderson and siblings Geraldine Cuske, Donald Hoffman (Sylvia), Ruth Yearling (Robert) and Richard Hoffman (JoAnn). He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Janet and sister, Joyce Hoffman.

The family gratefully declines flowers but donations may be made in Vince’s honor to Boys Town or St. Albert the Great of Sun Prairie. The family would also like to thank the paramedics and police of Sun Prairie for their professionalism and compassion.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 5, 2018, at ST. ALBERT THE GREAT CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2402 Albert Dr., Sun Prairie, with Msgr. Donn Heiar presiding. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass at the church on Friday. Burial will be held at Resurrection Catholic Church.
