Marie Fraser

Madison-On Monday February 19, 2018, Marie Elizabeth Fraser, age 89, left her earthly bonds to rejoin her loving parents, her brother whom she adored and her dearest friends, Jean Arpin, Parm Dega, and Jean Robinson who preceded her. She was a proud “East Sider”, born April 30, 1928 to William and Margaret (Miller) Fraser in Madison, living in the same Rutledge Street home most of her childhood. She graduated from East High School and went to the University of Wisconsin for several years where she was named A Big Ten Beauty in 1947. In 1951 she married John M Fox and together they built the house she would reside in until her passing. She was a begrudging stay at home mom, raising her 2 daughters while also handling the bookkeeping for the Fox Water softener company. A voracious reader, she also enjoyed reading to grade school children at the local elementary school. Her interest in books would lead to a long term partnership with the Lakeview Library and an endowment in the name of her mother.

Like her mother did for her, she set an example of kindness and acceptance towards others regardless of skin color or the God they worshipped. Her kindness was extended to the multiple charities she supported over the years. In addition to her charitable work she was passionate about her Scottish Heritage and her progressive politics. She once became so upset about a stolen Recall Walker sign she insisted on a replacement the next day. That sign still sits in her garage. In 1997 she fulfilled a lifelong dream, visiting her beloved Scotland with her daughter Liz. Of all her charities, she was probably the most passionate about Domestic Abuse where she enjoyed a 20 plus year relationship. Other than that, animals of any kind were her other favorites, right down to the birds and squirrels she not only fed regularly but also entertained with her large collection of records. She thought the cardinals were particularly fond of Harry Belafonte.

Marie is survived by her daughters, Lynn (Rick) Rasmussen of Oconomowoc and Lizabeth (Roger) Smith; niece, Kathleen Fox of Hudson, Massachusetts and nephew, Richard Fox of Las Vegas, Nevada.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, William M. Fraser.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11am on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at PLYMOUTH CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, 2401 Atwood Ave, Madison, with Rev. Leslie Schenk presiding. A visitation will take place at the church from 10am until the time of service.

A special thank you to Mel and Sandy Hoger, who have been her grocery shoppers, cab drivers, repairmen, guardians and dear friends. She was able to remain in her home because of their kindness. Also thanks to John Summers and Sara who were always there for backup. And finally to Dawn Lemke her care giver and companion over the last year. She was so fond of you and Pat Motiff, you became part of our family. We are indebted for your kindness and compassion.
