MILWAUKEE / MADISON - Philip Roedel, age 71, passed away on March 14, 2018 at Agrace in Fitchburg, Wisconsin.

Phil was born to Sylvia Wick (née Sobczak) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on September 28, 1946. Phil grew up in West Allis and joined the Roedel family when Sylvia married Norton Roedel in 1955.

Phil graduated from Nathan Hale High School in 1964 and started his long college career with one year at Milton College. Phil then enrolled at UW-Oshkosh, where he was most interested in playing sheepshead six hours per day and hanging out with his fraternity buddies.

Phil was drafted during the Vietnam War, but luckily was assigned to a post in Germany. While in Europe, he visited several countries and developed a love for travel. After serving his country, he returned to Wisconsin, where he married Rita Ramlet and embarked on a love story spanning 45 years of marriage and two children, Ann and Charles.

For over 30 years, they lived in Whitefish Bay, where Phil was instrumental in starting and expanding the village’s annual Fourth of July celebration. His many years of service on the Fourth of July committee were recognized by his appointment as grand marshal of the parade in his last year of service. Phil also spent over 30 years working at Associated Bag Company, where his colleagues became good friends.

Phil was laid-back and easygoing in all facets of life except for food, vacations, and sporting events. He was the quintessential foodie before the term was coined. Phil planned and executed vacations with precision. Favorite destinations included Germany, France, Italy, England, Canada, San Francisco, New York City, and Jackson Hole. He even went so far as to plan out what meals he would get from a particular restaurant (without the help of the internet). He also planned a trip to Disney World that was so detailed it even included bathroom breaks. He loved to attend sporting events, but was known to always leave in enough time to be the first one out of the parking lot.

For the last five years, Phil and Rita lived in Madison, where spending time with grandchildren brought great joy. Phil shared his love of travel with them and explored many new destinations. They especially loved going to the pool with him and getting snuggles.

Phil is survived by his wife, Rita, his children Ann (Jeremy) Peacock and Charles (Elizabeth Durkin) Roedel, and his granddaughters, Alexa and Julia Peacock. He is further survived by many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law from the Ramlet clan: Ellen Ramlet& Don Woessner, Liz & Carl Sutter, Bob & Cindy Ramlet, Phil Ramlet& Vicki Winter, Martha& Mark Mirsberger, and Margaret & Tony Logemann. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Anne Ramlet, and all of his nieces and nephews. He is further survived by his aunts, cousins, scores of wonderful friends, and brother Gregory Wick.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Norton and Sylvia, his father-in-law, William Ramlet, and his brother-in-law, William John Ramlet. He was also preceded in death by several members of his extended family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 24 at All Saints Catholic Church, 4051 North 25th Street, in Milwaukee. Visitation will take place from 10-11am and the service will start at 11am. Directly following the service, there will be a luncheon to celebrate Phil’s life at Hubbard Park Lodge, 3565 North Morris Boulevard.
