Anyone who lived on what was then the extreme north-side of Madison, or more properly speaking, behind sanitarium hill, was well aware of Mr Grindrod, if not personally, then by seeing him daily running through the streets to stay fit, or riding his black three speed to work. We knew he was a research chemist at Oscar's, and we knew he adopted fitness out of the war where we also knew he was taken prisoner and presumably abused by the Germans following the Battle of the Bulge. We did not speak to him about that and he was not quick to volunteer it either. He was a handsome, and fit man, he and his wife sensible, active and health conscious. They did indeed travel as a family to the west to ski, and kept a camper out front on their driveway at ready for trips nearer by. I admired Mr Grindrod for his grit, gumption and liberality and thank him both for his sacrifices in the war effort; for his education and training; for his contributions to food quality and safety; and mostly to providing a model for ethical choice and individuality to the generation following him. I thank him for all of that.
