Ralph Chamberlin

MADISON – Ralph E Chamberlin, age 83, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Monday, April 22, 2019. Ralph was born on August 1, 1935 in Toledo, OH to Richmond and Nila Chamberlin. He grew up in Racine but spent many happy summers vacationing with family in Michigan. He moved to Madison in his teen years and met the love of his life, Mary Jane Levenick. They graduated from East High School in 1954, spending the next 62 years together. Ralph served in the Army for two years, stationed in Alaska during the Korean Conflict. Twenty five years of his life were proudly spent serving the Madison Fire Department. Ralph pioneered the Lake Rescue Team and was honored by having two of the future rescue boats named after him.

Since the passing of his grandson Max, Mary and Ralph developed a relationship with Peace Lutheran Church which gave them a faith community and a sense of belonging; this was incredibly important. We were uplifted by the presence and constant support of Pastors Karen and Doug Locken.

Ralph spent many happy years fishing and golfing with his lifelong friends. He also enjoyed playing dominos and meeting weekly with the guys for coffee. His talent for woodworking is enjoyed by many people. Ralph loved giving these beautiful finished pieces to people he cared about. Mary and Ralph had lifelong friends from East High School, who they spent much of their time with in later years.

More than anything Ralph’s passion was for his family, most importantly his grandchildren. He never missed any of their school performances, sporting events, dance competitions, or birthday parties.

Ralph is survived by his wife, Mary Jane; children, Martha (Bob) Williams, Mike (Melissa Frey), and Vicki (Jay) Anderson; grandchildren, Justin, Peggy, Josh, Greg, and Lucy; great grandchildren, Barrett “Bear” and Lyla. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other family and friends. He is preceded in death by his grandson, Max Chamberlin; and his sister, Susanne.

A memorial service will be held at 3PM on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH, 701 South Century Avenue, Waunakee, with Pastors Karen and Doug Locken presiding. A 1PM visitation will be held at the church until the time of service on Saturday.
