Madison –
Barbara Benson, age 81, passed away on Thursday, December 15, 2022 at St. Mary’s Hospital. She was born on July 21, 1941 in Honolulu, Hawaii, the daughter of LeRoy E. and June J. Hanson.
Barbara graduated from Madison East High School in 1959. She graduated from UW Stevens Point then lived in Spring Green. She worked as a music teacher for River Valley Schools. Barbara was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where she was the organist. She was also a member of Lakeview Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir.
Barbara was diagnosed with MS in 1986. She worked for Wisconsin Vital Records until she retired. Barbara loved working with children. She also loved dogs and was a fan of the Packers and Badgers. Barbara also enjoyed traveling, a variety of music, and playing bingo and the game “Taboo” with her family. She attended teacher’s conventions in Milwaukee every year.
Barbara is survived by her brother, Bruce (Charlotte) Benson of California; sister, Kathleen Benson of Madison; brother, Thomas Benson of Monona and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, LeRoy and June Benson.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at Lakeview Lutheran Church, 4001 Mandrake Road, with Pastor Darin Wiebe officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lakeview Lutheran Church or the MS Society.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Oak Park Place, as well as Dr. Kao and the nurses at St. Mary’s Hospital.
