Obituary
MADISON – Esther D. Hornung, age 94, was reunited with her husband and three children on Saturday, May 8, 2021. Esther was born on August 19, 1926 in Madison, WI to Max and Laura (Blizzard) Gueldner. She grew up on the northside of Madison and graduated from East High School in 1944. Esther married the love of her life Anthony J. Hornung on July 20, 1944 at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church. Esther loved to bake and cook and her most prized accomplishment was Esther’s Kitchen at St. Peter’s, making people fat and happy. You would never walk away hungry when she prepared a meal. She loved to can, grow raspberries, garden, grow house plants, especially African Violets, but truly cherished family get-togethers. She was the super in superglue that kept the family together and will be greatly missed by all.
The family honored a promise to their father, before he passed away, that their mother would be cared for, by her children, in her own home, until she passed away. That promise was kept.
Esther is survived by her children, Anthony P. (Lois), Annetta (Don) Havey, Joseph (Judy), Jerome (Mary), Deb (Brad) McGuire, and Dennis (Lori); special grandchildren, Jody (Louie) Williams and Nicholas (Nichole) Breuch; 15 additional grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; and one great great grandson. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other family and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Tony; infant daughter, Monica; daughters, Veronica Balch and Janice Russell.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at ST. PETER CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5001 N. Sherman Avenue, Madison. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 11, 2021 from 4-7PM at the church and again on Wednesday from 10AM until time of Mass. Burial at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Cemetery.
