I met Harry Klinger because I was attorney for the Madison Police and Fire Commission, during the very difficult years punctuated by Chief Durkin's well-known efforts to bring women into the department. Ed Durkin relied very heavily on Harry's judgment, skill, reliability, calm demeanor, and the respect in which he was held. I clearly remember Ed saying to me in his office, in the old Fire Admin building, "Why is that with some people, when you tell them to do something, it never seems to happen, and with other people, whatever you tell them to do is done perfectly?" He was referring to certain aspects of the testing and training program that just weren't working until Ed made Harry the "Affirmative Action Officer" so that Harry could be in charge of a broad range of personnel matters that weren't really part of his conventional Asst. Chief portfolio. There was no doubt that Harry's work was crucial to the department's notable achievements, and to Ed Durkin's well-deserved public reputation.

Dear Klinger Family, We are so very sorry about Harry's passing. What an amazing man he was. I'll never forget the pride he had when show me his insanely beautiful handcrafted dollhouses. He was a nice and very talented man. What a life he led. Wishing you peace and love during this time. Kerry, Hannah, Chance Weber (Cindy's sister)
