Obituary

Brian John Meuer, age 74, passed on Thursday, July 11, 2024, at William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans' Hospital. He was born on May 24, 1950, to Sylvester and Irene (Hansen) Meuer in Madison, WI. Brian attended St. James Elementary School and Central High School, where he was involved in track and wrestling. Brian served in the Air Force and after his honorable discharge, he returned to Madison and worked as a custodian.

Brian enjoyed traveling. One of his favorite trips involved traveling south with family members to New Orleans, Graceland, a swamp tour in Louisiana, the Mammoth Cave, and the Arch in St. Louis. Among other travels, he visited California and the Apostle Islands. But his favorite trips were to casinos. He went to Las Vegas several times. He frequented the Ho-Chunk Casino in Baraboo. It was difficult to know which he enjoyed more: the slot machines or the fabulous buffets. The trips to and from Baraboo were a pleasure, especially when taking scenic routes.

Brian possessed a photographic memory with directions; thus, he served as the navigator when driving around Madison. He could also tell you all about the buildings and people who once resided in places all over Madison. Madison held his heart.

Brian was incredibly fortunate to be involved in the VA Community Support Program (CSP). Through CSP he attended Camp American Legion and took numerous water trips, such as leisurely pontoon rides, and boating and fishing expeditions. He attended many CSP picnics, holiday meals and other events. He (almost) always looked forward to seeing CSP staff.

Most of all, Brian enjoyed the company of his family and attending family events. Brian is survived by his siblings: Jim (Barb) Meuer; Karen Meuer; Pam (Gunnar Josefsson) Meuer; Jeff Meuer; Tess (Chris Luther) Meuer; Nancy Meuer; Kevin Meuer and Rita Meuer as well as his nieces and nephews, Eric, Jenny, Naomi, Micaiah, Estee; and 5 grandnieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; and his sister, Mary Meuer Pluss.

The family wishes to thank the many VA doctors who treated Brian through the years. We send a special gratitude to the team who assisted him at the end of his life, Dr. Eric Yanke and his nurse Rachel as well as Dr. Artie Gallegos.

The family is incredibly grateful for the care and support that CSP provided for so many years: words can never express what a positive force you were in his life. Thank you Orna, Todd, Andy, Jonathan, Tracy, Megan, Alexis, Dr. Leslie Greenspan and all the retired CSP staff who guided and provided help for him in so many ways. The family would like to thank Barry and Kim whom Brian relied on for many years. We thank the staff and friends at Jefferson Assisted Living where he spent his last years. Finally, in the past months Brian experienced care above and beyond from Elti Vako, Interim Healthcare Nurse. Thank you Elti.
