Gailute Palionis

Madison – Gailute E. Palionis, age 88, passed away on Tuesday, December 22, 2020. Gailute was born on April 26, 1932 in Kaunas, Lithuania to Domininkas and Filomena Jurjonas. Her family was displaced by Soviet Occupation during WWII and they settled in Chicago, Illinois after the war. She attended grade school in Kaunas, Lithuania and completed her education at Maria High School in Chicago. It was in Chicago that she met and married Tadas Palionis on September 4, 1954. They moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to begin their family and had resided in Madison for the last 50 plus years.

Self-taught, she had a successful career designing homes in the Madison area, including the family home at 1129 S. Whitney Way. In her spare time she would sit with a pad of paper and draw floor plans. She designed many homes in the Madison Area, including numerous Parade of Homes houses. She also obtained a degree in Interior Design at MATC and had an active interior design business.

She was a talented artist, working with paint, mosaic, and creating intricately patterned etched and inked Lithuanian Easter eggs. She enjoyed backyard landscaping, gardening, cooking and was an accomplished seamstress, clothing, and costume designer, creating costumes and garments for the theater, weddings, and reenactments. Gailute continued the tradition of Lithuanian cooking. She was a humble, kind, and generous person and will be missed by all that knew her.

Gailute is survived by her children Daiva, Lina and Tomas; three grandchildren Atticus, Ossian, and Olivia Sharp; brother Pranas Jurjonas; and close cousins. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other family and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband of 50 years; and her sister Salomeja (Petras) Smaizys and sister-in-law Virginia Jurjonas.

A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church. Burial at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery.
