Madison/Deforest – Michael John Huemmer, age 36, passed away on Friday, January 8, 2021, peacefully surrounded by family and close friends after a courageous battle with a glioblastoma brain tumor. He was born on September 4, 1984, to John and Tammy (Ryan) Huemmer.

Michael graduated from Madison East High School in 2003. He was a three-sport athlete competing in Football, Basketball, and Baseball.

Michael was employed at Pepsi of Madison for 15 years. He started his career as a Liftgate Merchandiser in April of 2005 and quickly moved to Lead Technician in the Refurbishing department.

Michael spent most of his time at athletic events and coaching. Michael had a way with teaching and coaching young ball players. In 2007and 2008 he coached football at Madison East High School and coached baseball at Oregon High School for the past six years.

Michael’s battle with cancer started in January 2010, when he was only 25 years old. At this time, Michael underwent his first surgery to remove a golf-ball-sized cancerous astrocytoma brain tumor and was treated with radiation and chemotherapy. After intense treatment, Michael was cancer free for 7 ½ years. In 2017 the astrocytoma brain tumor came back and in July 2019 it mutated into a glioblastoma brain tumor. In February 2020 and June 2020 two more surgeries were performed. During this three-year span, from 2017 to 2020 Michael’s cancer treatments including chemotherapy, two clinical trials at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Avastin. Even at the end one of his final wishes was to donate his brain to National Institutes of Health for glioblastoma research.

Being with family and friends was his passion. Whether he was going to Packer, Badger, and Brewer games or attending games of others, he loved sports. When he was not coaching, he was playing baseball and softball on many leagues; refereeing and playing sand volleyball were summertime favorites.

Michael’s smile was infectious and could light up a room. Michael was a fun-loving person who truly lived life like a 3 – 1 baseball count. He always could make you laugh and lighten the mood even during the most challenging times. Michael changed people’s lives and people who knew him were better for knowing him.

Michael is survived by his true love Robin Fiedler and Bently (dog); parents, John and Tammy (Ryan) Huemmer of Madison; sister, Whitney (Joseph) Rosas; nephews, Ace Rosas (godson), Jax Rosas of Madison; grandparents, Nancy Ryan of Madison, Mary Ann and Ray Hellenbrand of Madison; godparent, Paul Huemmer of Sun Prairie, Carrie Mack of Madison; and close friend, Jason Raisbeck.
