FITCHBURG - It is with profound sorrow that we share with you that Philip John Lacy died April 10, 2021 in Madison, WI.

Phil was born July 3, 1928 to Leo and Alma (Batker) Lacy. He grew up on the family farm in Fitchburg, WI. After graduation from Edgewood High School, he continued working on the family farm. His farming career was briefly interrupted when he was drafted to serve in the United States Army. While stationed in Germany, Phil took advantage of every outing that was offered and visited many countries in Europe, including Italy, France, Switzerland, England, and the Netherlands. In 2014, Phil received appreciation for his service by traveling to Washington D.C. on the Badger Honor Flight.

In 1957, his sister Ellen’s roommate Winifred (Winnie) Lottes needed help moving her sewing machine, and Phil kindly obliged. After a whirlwind courtship, they were married October 18, 1958 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Madison, WI.

In the early 1960’s he graduated from Wisconsin School of Electronics and started a long career as an Electrical Field Engineer. He worked at many locations in and around Madison, and eventually retired from John Deere Financial in the mid-1990’s. Phil was admired for his strong work ethic.

After retirement, he and Winnie hit the rails. Traveling by train suited Phil’s enjoyment of taking in all the details of the world around him. Together they visited almost every state and much of Canada.

Around 2003, he began working out at the Fitchburg Senior Center’s exercise class, making friends, and keeping fit.

Phil was a humble, hard-working man who always had a project that he was working on and was deeply devoted to his family.

Phil is survived by his wife Winnie; his children and their sweethearts, Mary Beth Lacy and Daniel Klein, Tom and Karen Lacy, Bill and Norleen Lacy, Joe and Sandy Lacy, Anne Lacy and Paul Heimann, Kit Lacy and Tim Greenfield, Dan and Jen Lacy; nine grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; numerous step grandchildren and step great grandchildren; his siblings and their sweethearts, Paul and Milda Lacy, Howard and Carolyn Lacy, Ellen and Dick Palzkill, and John Lacy and Maureen Richards; and sister-in-law Joanne Lottes; numerous nieces and nephews; cousins; and a multitude of friends.

He was predeceased by his parents; Winnie’s parents George and Leita Lottes; brother-in-law Jim Lottes, and son-in-law Jon Wendt.

The family requests no flowers, please. If you wish to make a donation in his memory, his family feels that he would approve of donations to the Madison Area Food Pantry Gardens. http://www.foodpantrygardens.org/donate.html

Be kind to one another.

“He was a good man. He was a quiet man. He was my pillar of strength. And I love him dearly.” (Winnie Lacy)
