Carol Sumner

Carol Sumner was born in 1953 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and grew up in Madison, Wisconsin. She was an adventurous and independent child that loved animals. As a teenager she became a skilled equestrian and worked as a counselor at a horseback riding camp.

Carol was extremely bright, but focused most of her energy on learning foreign languages. She became fluent in Spanish, and after her junior year in high school spent five years living in Morelia, Mexico, where she made some lifelong friends.

Most of Carol’s career was spend with the US Department of Immigration, in a variety of roles. She began as a translator for refugees from the Cuban Mariel boatlift, before moving to a US immigration post in frigid Edmonton, Canada. For most of her career with immigration, Carol served as a border control agent in San Diego. She was active in the labor union for border agents.

Later in life, Carol moved back to Madison, where she lived with her brother Mark. After retiring in DeForest, WI, she returned to her hobby of taking care of animals, with a special interest in raising birds, keeping a flock of racing pigeons and also caring for her beloved dog Tucker. She enjoyed reading and discussing politics. She died peacefully in her sleep at home on August 8, 2021. She is survived by her brothers Mark (Shelia and Mathew) and Scott (Bi and Isabella), and her mother Martha Freeman (Maxwell).
